The vision behind Atchayam Trust is deeply personal.
Born and raised in Tamil Nadu, Mr. P. Naveenkumar grew up witnessing hardship at a young age. His father lived with a disability and often faced social discrimination. His mother suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis and lived with constant pain. As a young boy, Naveen wanted to support his parents but was too young to help. These early experiences left a lasting imprint, shaping his sensitivity towards those pushed to the margins of society.
At just 19 years of age, during his undergraduate engineering studies, a life-changing moment gave direction to his purpose. At the Salem bus terminal, Naveen met Mr. Rajasekar, an elderly man surviving through begging. A simple cup of tea led to a conversation about loss, loneliness, and harmful dependence of Rajasekar that had pushed him onto the streets. Naveen took him home, stood by him through immense challenges, and helped him reclaim dignity through employment.
Soon after, Naveen met a disabled man who shared a bitter truth: “It is people like you who give us money and make us settle for begging. We are denied jobs because of our disability. Instead of empowering us, society treats us as burdens”.This confrontation shook Naveen deeply. He realized the root cause of begging was not an individual failure, but a systemic failure—not a lack of ability, but a lack of opportunity and inclusion.
Inspired by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and strengthened by his own family’s struggles, Naveen dreamed of a society where no one is left behind because of poverty, disability, or illness. This conviction led to the founding of Atchayam Trust in 2014. >With a Master’s degree in Thermal Engineering, Naveenkumar chose purpose over a conventional career, dedicating himself to social transformation.
Today, under his leadership, Atchayam Trust has grown into a nationally recognised model for dignified rehabilitation, integrating rescue, shelter, mental healthcare, skill development training and long –term reintegration. He currently leads the implementation of the SMILE sub-scheme under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in Erode District, where Atchayam Trust serves as the official implementing partner.
Known for his grounded and values-based leadership and dignity-first approach, Naveenkumar collaborates closely with government bodies, CSR partners, mental health professionals, and young people, while regularly engaging with educational institutions and policy platforms.
“Real change begins when we stop giving coins and start giving people a chance — to heal, to work, and to belong.”
Through his journey, rehabilitation is redefined not as charity, but as a path to dignity, opportunity and social equity.
