Rescuing

Many individuals engaged in begging or living on the streets are often neglected due to their worn-out appearance, lack of hygiene, and foul odor — making it difficult for the public to approach or assist them. At Atchayam Trust, our dedicated team of young volunteers steps beyond these barriers with compassion.

The rescue process begins with personal grooming — including haircuts or head shaving, followed by bathing support and provision of essential toiletries. Recognizing that clean clothing restores dignity and confidence, we provide fresh clothes of their preference to help them feel human again.

If a person is found in poor physical health, immediate first aid is given and hospital care is arranged when required. Once stabilized, they are offered nutritious food of their choice. Through this empathetic and respectful approach, we begin the journey of restoring their hope and rebuilding their lives.

Rescuing individuals with mental illness presents unique challenges, unlike working with other vulnerable groups engaged in begging. At Atchayam Trust, our committed and spirited volunteer team tirelessly engages with these individuals, often spending an entire day making rounds to build trust.

Establishing rapport can be extremely difficult, as some individuals may be unresponsive, fearful, or react aggressively due to their mental condition — including hitting, pinching, or even slapping volunteers. Despite these hardships, our volunteers approach each person with patience, empathy, and resilience. Through persistent efforts and compassionate communication, they eventually succeed in gaining trust and safely rescuing them, initiating their journey toward care and recovery.

The way we renew their lives is an admirable comprehensive strategy that makes us unique
